Graeme McDowell has been banned from participating in the upcoming LIV Greenbrier tournament due to a violation of the league’s anti-doping policy. McDowell, the winner of the 2010 U.S. Open and a member of Smash GC, tested positive for a banned substance, R-methamphetamine (levo-methamphetamine), during the LIV Golf Nashville event. As a result, he will face a one tournament suspension at LIV Golf Greenbrier and a fine of $125,000. Additionally, McDowell’s and his team’s results from LIV Golf Nashville will be disqualified, with adjustments made to prize money and points.
In a statement on social media, McDowell explained that he unknowingly took a generic Vicks nasal decongestant, which contained a banned substance. He attributed his use of the medication to severe congestion that was affecting his sleep. McDowell expressed regret for not checking the medication and not applying for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) as a professional golfer should have done. He accepted the sanctions imposed by LIV Golf.
McDowell also took the opportunity to criticize other tours for their lack of strict enforcement of anti-doping rules, highlighting LIV Golf’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport. Despite the challenges posed by this situation, McDowell acknowledged the importance of these rules and penalties. He expressed pride in his 22-year career and looked forward to returning to the golf course at LIV Golf Chicago.
At the LIV Golf Greenbrier tournament, McDowell’s spot on Smash GC will be filled by a reserve player, whose identity is yet to be confirmed. McDowell will be eligible to compete again at LIV Golf Chicago, starting on September 13.
