Gregg Berhalter, former U.S. men’s national team manager, has been appointed as head coach and director of football for Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire, the club announced on Tuesday. Berhalter, who was dismissed in July following the U.S. team’s early Copa America exit, will officially begin his new role with the Fire after the 2024 MLS regular season concludes.
Returning to MLS after his successful tenure with the Columbus Crew from 2013 to 2018, where he guided the team to four playoff appearances and an MLS Cup final in 2015, Berhalter brings both league expertise and national team experience. Fire owner Joe Mansueto expressed confidence in Berhalter’s leadership, stating, “His previous success in MLS…and his experience leading the U.S. men’s national team…make him an ideal fit for our vision for the Club moving forward.”
