The New York Jets have reached an agreement with veteran pass rusher Haason Reddick to end his holdout, securing his return for the remainder of the 2024 NFL season. The deal, described by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport as a “short-term solution,” opens the door for a potential long-term extension, which could materialize in the offseason depending on Reddick’s performance.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets agreed to waive over $12 million in fines as part of the deal, allowing Reddick to honor his contract and report to the team without penalty. To sidestep the NFL’s rule prohibiting teams from waiving fines, the Jets reportedly structured a bonus for Reddick that effectively covers the fines he would have incurred.
Rapoport explained the compromise: “The Jets, unable to waive the fines, provided a bonus to Reddick to offset the amount he would have owed. This deal keeps Reddick on the field, and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, says the focus now shifts toward securing a long-term deal in free agency—if Reddick performs to expectations.”
Reddick’s holdout followed his trade from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Jets in March. After passing his physical and officially joining the team in April, Reddick stayed away in hopes of securing a more lucrative long-term extension. With that deal not materializing, Reddick and the Jets found a middle ground that allows him to return and prove his worth over the remainder of the season.
The Jets have bolstered their defense, adding a dynamic pass rusher to their roster for a crucial 2024 campaign. Reddick now has the chance to showcase his skills in one of the league’s top defenses, hoping to secure a long-term contract with the Jets or elsewhere in the offseason.
Aside from the Reddick deal, the Jets also made waves with their recent acquisition of star wide receiver Davante Adams in a blockbuster trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. The deal, largely driven by team owner Woody Johnson, involved the Jets agreeing to take on the remainder of Adams’ hefty contract—something that other teams shied away from due to financial concerns.
According to both Schefter and Rapoport, Johnson played a key role in resolving the Reddick holdout as well, further cementing his involvement in shaping the team’s future.
With Reddick back in the fold and Adams boosting the offense, the Jets have significantly improved their odds of making a playoff run. However, their path forward remains uncertain as they face a critical Week 7 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which could determine the trajectory of their season.
Though the Jets have made bold moves, their success will ultimately be measured by wins on the field. The stakes are high, and the pressure is on for the team to deliver results in the coming weeks.
