Lewis Hamilton expressed his desire for Sebastian Vettel to take his place at the Mercedes Formula 1 team in 2025, as he moves on to a new chapter with Ferrari. Despite signing a contract extension with Mercedes last year, Hamilton has chosen to activate a release clause to negotiate a move to Ferrari starting next season. With Hamilton’s imminent departure, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff stated that all options are being considered. Vettel, a four-time German world champion, has been linked to the vacant seat alongside George Russell for next season. The former Red Bull driver, who retired in 2022, confirmed that he has been in discussions with Wolff about a possible return to Formula 1. While Vettel is open to the idea, he stated that it is not his priority at the moment.
Hamilton and Vettel had fierce battles on track during their time as rivals in Formula 1. Vettel’s career took a downturn after his contract with Ferrari was not renewed, landing him in the midfield with Aston Martin. However, Hamilton believes that Vettel’s experience and achievements make him an excellent candidate for Mercedes. He expressed his excitement for Vettel’s potential return, highlighting his German nationality, multiple world championships, and strong values that would benefit the team.
There are speculations that Vettel may follow in Fernando Alonso’s footsteps and make a return to the sport. In response, Hamilton reiterated his intention to leave Formula 1 for good when the time comes. He stated that he never considered taking a break and then returning, emphasizing that once he exits, he plans to leave permanently. Although he acknowledges that he will miss the sport, Hamilton believes that the experience of working with a team towards victory is incomparable and something he cannot imagine replicating outside of Formula 1.
