Lewis Hamilton, representing the Mercedes AMG F1 W15 car, showed his dominance in the last practice session before the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. The session took place at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit in Montreal, Canada. After facing wet conditions on Friday, the drivers finally had the opportunity to test the newly resurfaced track in dry weather. Hamilton, who had secured his first pole position and victory at this event 17 years ago, set an impressive time of 1:12.549s during the qualifying simulations with soft tires. He opened a significant gap of seven tenths of a second over his competitors, with Max Verstappen close behind, with a difference of 0.374s. Verstappen had to revert to his old engine for the rest of the weekend due to an electrical issue with his new unit during the previous session. George Russell secured third place for Mercedes, while Lance Stroll impressed with a fourth place for Aston Martin. Oscar Piastri and McLaren’s Lando Norris claimed fifth and seventh places, respectively, with a standout performance from Daniel Ricciardo in sixth place. Fernando Alonso secured eighth place for Aston Martin and Sergio Perez, who was recently retained by Red Bull, finished in ninth. Ferrari struggled in this session, with both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz lacking pace. Leclerc criticized the SF-24 car for its braking performance and described the team’s overall speed as slow. He finished at the bottom of the top 10, eight tenths of a second behind Hamilton. Sainz only managed a 12th place, with Haas’ Kevin Magnussen splitting the two Ferrari drivers. Unfortunately, both Alex Albon and Zhou Guanyu had their sessions cut short. Albon hit the Wall of Champions after running wide at the final chicane, damaging the right rear of his Williams FW46. However, he managed to recover the car and bring it back to the pits. Zhou spun at Turn 1, causing him to hit the barriers at Turn 2 just five minutes into the session. This was Zhou’s second consecutive accident, as he had aquaplaned into the wall at Turn 5 on Friday. Qualifying is scheduled to take place at 4:00 pm local time.
