Nico Hulkenberg impresses for the Haas F1 Team in 2024, achieving success in three out of the five races so far. In 2026, Sauber will compete as the official Audi team, after the acquisition of a majority stake in the Swiss engineering company by the Audi Group earlier this year. It is still unknown who Hulkenberg will replace at Sauber and who will take his place at Haas.
Recently, the German driver equaled Andrea de Cesaris’ record for the most race starts in Formula 1 without a win. He also held the record for the most races without a podium for a significant period of time. Despite this, Hulkenberg is highly respected in the paddock and among fans for his consistent performances and ability to secure points for midfield teams throughout his career, which spans over 200 races.
Now, Hulkenberg can expect to join an official team from his home country, which could potentially be competitive from the start due to the significant regulatory changes planned for the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship.

He stated: “It’s like starting with a blank canvas… The advantage that different teams have will be leveled to some extent, creating a fairer playing field for everyone.” He also added: “This presents a good opportunity to be competitive right away, but there’s always the expectation to achieve success as quickly as possible,” as expressed by the Haas driver.
Hulkenberg also mentioned that he believes Audi selected him due to his extensive experience in Formula 1. He further explained: “I think they value my experience. Probably my ability to assess and set up the car, as well as contribute to its development.” He acknowledged the great opportunity and immense responsibility that comes with it, stating: “Of course, it’s a great opportunity for me, but it also comes with high expectations and substantial work to deliver.”
Finally, Hulkenberg accepted Audi’s offer because he believes in the team’s long-term goals. He stated: “Clearly, they have ambitious plans. It’s a huge project with great aspirations.” He also recognized the pressure that comes with competing for a manufacturer, saying: “There are always high expectations when competing for a manufacturer. However, they are determined to move forward,” he concluded.
For now, Hulkenberg’s focus remains on Haas and the 2024 season. The Miami Grand Prix is scheduled to start at 9:00 PM BST (4:00 PM local time) on Sunday, May 5.
