Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation announced this Wednesday a strategic technological partnership with Samsung Electronics to develop a next-generation infotainment system, leveraging the capabilities of the new software-defined vehicles (SDVs) currently being developed by both brands.
The new software-defined vehicles allow for cloud-based updates, potentially throughout their entire lifespan.
The new infotainment system that Hyundai and Kia aim to develop with Samsung will allow owners of the new connected vehicles to control much more than just the car through their smartphones, as they plan to integrate Samsung’s SmartThings app, which provides access to various connected devices.
“Our goal is to enrich the mobility experience for Hyundai Motor and Kia customers by offering personalized services that go beyond transportation, seamlessly integrating vehicles with smartphones”, said Chang Song, President and Head of the Advanced Vehicle Platform Division (AVP) at Hyundai Motor Group.
For Samsung, this is an opportunity to expand the SmartThings ecosystem, providing new lifestyles and value to even more customers. “Through our collaboration with Hyundai and Kia, customers will experience the convenience of SmartThings not only at home but also in their vehicles, transcending space”, stated Paul (Kyungwhoon) Cheun, president, CTO of the DX Division of Samsung Electronics and Head of Samsung Research.
