In a no-holds-barred debate showdown, Rep. Colin Allred, running to unseat Texas Senator Ted Cruz, left no stone unturned in reminding Texans of Cruz’s 2021 jaunt to Cancun during a deadly winter storm. Allred didn’t hold back, hammering Cruz on what he called the Senator’s “self-promotional” style and divisive tactics, claiming Cruz’s top priority is Cruz himself—not Texans.
“Cruz is about books, podcasts, and anything that brings him attention and cash,” Allred charged, branding Cruz’s tactics as “angertainment.” Allred, positioning himself as a unifier, vowed to bring Texans together around what he called “our shared values”—a contrast to Cruz’s style, which he says is one of “strategic divisiveness.” For many Texans, the Cancun trip remains a sore spot, as Allred highlighted: “When the lights went out, he went to Cancun. I’ll never abandon you.”
The message couldn’t be clearer, and with Cruz’s polarizing reputation, Allred is betting Texans won’t forget who showed up when things got tough—and who didn’t.
