IMSA has confirmed the participation of 35 teams for the seventh round of the 2024 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The race, known as the Chevrolet Grand Prix, will take place at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP) and feature three categories: LMP2, GTD, and GTD Pro. The event will consist of a 2-hour and 40-minute sprint race on July 14th.
The LMP2 category will be the main prototype class for this year’s race, replacing the GTPs and former LMP3s from the previous year. A total of 12 LMP2s, 14 GTDs, and nine GTD Pro cars will compete for victory in their respective classes. The prototype category will feature the familiar Oreca 07 Gibson machinery, with the exception of Sean Creech Motorsport, who will be using the Ligier JS P217. Additionally, four GTP drivers, including Pipo Derani, Renger van der Zande, Filipe Albuquerque, and Louis Deletraz, will be competing in the LMP2 category.
In the championship standings, Era Motorsport lost their lead to the #74 Riley crew due to misfortune at Watkins Glen. However, they are only eight points behind and remain strong contenders. The team also announced the IMSA debut of Stuart Wiltshire at CTMP, as they assess their decision to choose a Bronze-graded driver for the 2025 season. Wiltshire, along with Dyan Dalziel, will aim to close the gap to the #74 crew of Gar Robinson and Felipe Fraga.
The GTD Pro category will feature seven manufacturers, two of which will field a pair of new cars for the full season. Leading the standings are Laurin Heinrich and Seb Priaulx in the #77 AO Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R, with three race victories under their belt. Vasser Sullivan’s Ben Barnicoat and Jack Hawksworth, the reigning GTD Pro champions, will be determined to narrow the gap. Ford Multimatic will continue their efforts with the new Mustang GT3, competing against Chevrolet’s Corvette Z06 GT3.R in the Detroit-based rivalry.
The GTD category will have the largest number of cars among the three categories. Currently, Philip Ellis and Russell Ward from #57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 are leading the standings, followed by Patrick Gallagher and Robby Foley from Turner Motorsport.
