The Red Bull was impeccable in the 2023 Formula 1 season, winning 21 out of the 22 rounds contested – 19 of them with Max Verstappen. This year, the rivals want to at least get closer, but it is also expected that Red Bull will maintain its supremacy.
Former driver Gerhard Berger told Auto Motor und Sport that it will not be an easy task to catch the Austrian team: ‘In Formula 1, things always go differently than you think. But if Red Bull continues like this, it will be difficult to catch them. That can only work if the others take radical steps. I still have the utmost confidence in Ferrari. They were better in the second half of last season than the results showed. You can also never underestimate Mercedes and [Lewis] Hamilton, McLaren is also doing a very good job’.
That being said, the Austrian emphasized that even dominance has interesting aspects: ‘We said during the [Michael] Schumacher era that this cannot last long. But such dominance also creates a certain excitement, where you are caught up in perfection. Whether it’s the driver not making mistakes again, the team completing all pit stops in the best time, the car not breaking down again, or the engine not stopping again. It’s fascinating and you just want to know if it will be like this again next time’.
