The firing of New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh has sent shockwaves through the NFL, with many speculating that while Aaron Rodgers may have had a hand in the decision, the primary issue was Saleh’s loss of support in the locker room. Despite Rodgers’ claims of having no involvement, the narrative of an estranged locker room has been reinforced by none other than former Jets offensive lineman Mekhi Becton, who appeared to mock Saleh on social media following the news.
However, not everyone was pleased with Saleh’s dismissal. One of his biggest advocates, star cornerback Sauce Gardner, expressed his dismay over the decision, highlighting the bond he shared with the former coach.
“I was shocked. The reality is we’re 2-3 and everything is still in front of us,” Gardner stated. “Coach Saleh and me were extremely close from the day that the Jets first drafted me. To be honest, like, he changed my life. Where I come from and all the stuff that I’ve been through growing up in Detroit, and for him to be able to take a chance on me. For his birthday, I text him and every year I always say, ‘I appreciate you for taking a chance on me.’ He really changed my life, he changed my family’s life. That was always the goal for me in life, and he made that happen.”
Gardner’s heartfelt words underscore the loyalty Saleh inspired among many of his players, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. But despite the outpouring of support from players like Gardner, it seems Saleh’s leadership wasn’t enough to secure his position, especially with a struggling offense under the leadership of Rodgers.
Shortly after his firing, Saleh released an emotional statement, thanking the Jets organization and his players.
“To the Jets Organization, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many incredible people. I will always be appreciative of the love and support from everyone at 1 Jets Drive,” Saleh wrote. “To all of the players, I truly love and appreciate every single one of you. The character of the men in the locker room made coaching you guys the ultimate privilege. Through all the ups and downs, each and every one of you showed up every day and attacked every moment.”
Despite the emotional farewell, some analysts argue that Saleh’s downfall was inevitable. While his connection with players like Gardner was genuine, his overall coaching performance in the NFL left much to be desired. With Rodgers’ underwhelming form adding pressure, Saleh’s fate was sealed. The Jets are now left to navigate the fallout of a divided locker room and a season that remains in jeopardy.
