Former President Jimmy Carter, celebrating his 100th birthday earlier this month, recently fulfilled a wish close to his heart: casting his ballot for Vice President Kamala Harris. Carter, who has been in hospice care since February 2023, shared with family members that this vote meant more to him than the milestone of reaching a century. His son, Chip Carter, recalled, “He was only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris.”
At the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Carter’s grandson, Jason, captured the spirit of this moment, saying Harris embodies the former president’s legacy of integrity, compassion, and fighting for what’s right. As Harris continues her historic vice presidency, she stands as a testament to Carter’s lifelong values, Jason noted, adding, “She knows what is right, and she fights for it.”
Though Carter remains a quiet figure in rural Georgia, his legacy still makes headlines—even drawing barbs from former President Donald Trump, who sarcastically claims Carter “must be happy” his presidency now seems “brilliant” compared to the Biden administration. Yet, Carter’s family prefers to emphasize the contrast, with Jason highlighting his grandfather’s dedication to “honesty and integrity” rather than engaging in rivalries.
Through the years, Carter’s enduring friendship with President Biden has only grown, rooted in mutual respect dating back to 1976. As Biden once said, “Jimmy’s not just a bright smile. He can win, and he can appeal to more segments of the population than any other person.”
