What do you believe is the primary cause for the criticism of LIV Golf? Is it the structure or the financial aspect? Frankly, it could be either one. With numerous prominent figures like Lefty, Bryson Dechambeau, and Brooks Koepka already involved in the league, you may be wondering why LIV’s lineup is so impressive. If there were more notable names such as Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and the 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus, it would surely be more illustrious. However, that is not the case, and it is not due to a lack of effort on LIV’s part, according to Gary Player.
In an exclusive interview with Bunkered, Gary Player disclosed that he and other influential figures were offered substantial sums of money to join the Saudi-funded league. “Nicklaus and Tiger were offered financial incentives. However, we declined because we have a deep respect and gratitude for what the PGA Tour has done for us.” This revelation may come as a surprise to many, as Player still serves as an international ambassador for Golf Saudi, a company established in 2018 to promote and integrate the sport into Saudi Arabian culture.
One of the most recent additions to LIV’s lineup is Spanish golfer Jon Rahm, and rumors have been circulating within the golf community since December that he was paid over $500 million to leave the PGA Tour. When asked about this matter, Player expressed his opinion, stating, “[LIV is] providing Jon Rahm with $540 million. I believe that is excessive. It is simply my personal viewpoint.”
