In a lighthearted moment amid a tense campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris made an unexpected appearance on Saturday Night Live, playing herself in a sketch poking fun at both former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. Harris joined actress Maya Rudolph, who has been portraying her on SNL, to deliver a mock pep talk filled with jabs at her political rivals.
The highlight of the skit came as Harris referenced a recent viral video showing Trump in Wisconsin, where he awkwardly attempted to climb into a garbage truck while wearing a high-visibility orange vest. “I am just here to remind you that you have got this,” Harris told Rudolph in a motivational tone. “You can do something your opponent cannot do, like open doors.”
The skit didn’t hold back on Biden either. An actor portraying the president delivered a stream of rambling, nonsensical sentences, with Harris’s character, played by Rudolph, giving exaggeratedly wide-eyed reactions, especially when “Biden” suggested speaking to reporters.
The appearance also follows a minor controversy involving Biden, who recently made headlines when he appeared to refer to Trump supporters as “garbage.” The comment added fuel to Harris’s campaign as she works to differentiate herself from both Trump and her sometimes-gaffe-prone running mate. While Harris worked the Rust Belt with a stop in Michigan on Sunday, Trump continued his swing through key battleground states, including Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia.
The SNL cameo added a lighthearted twist to an otherwise intense race and gave Harris a national platform to take playful swipes at her rivals as she heads into the final days of the campaign.
