Lando Norris does not anticipate the end of his winless streak in the near future. McLaren, which was a strong contender alongside Red Bull for race wins in the latter part of the 2023 season, had a successful development plan that took them from the back of the grid to the front.
Following their impressive progress last year, there were high expectations for McLaren in the 2024 season. However, at the moment, the team seems to be lagging behind in terms of performance compared to the dominant Red Bulls and Ferraris. When asked about the possibility of his rising team winning races this season, Norris replied: “Not in the near future – for sure! I believe we can win with the right circumstances – if we improve the car as needed.”
Norris humorously acknowledged that McLaren still has a long way to go before competing for race wins, considering the current state of their car. However, he concluded by stating that if they develop their car effectively, they will certainly have a fair chance of winning a race this season.
After McLaren’s resurgence in the middle of last season, it was expected that the Papaya team would secure race wins this year. However, the team had a slight regression in terms of pure performance and seems to lack the additional edge needed to win races. Norris discussed the development strategy his team needs to follow to consistently compete for race wins and podiums.
The Surrey-based team plans to introduce their first upgrades to the MCL38 during the Miami Grand Prix, followed by a significant upgrade package in Imola. If they can replicate their development progress from last year, it will certainly be intriguing to see how they compare to Red Bull and Ferrari.
