The highly anticipated Austrian sprint race in 2024 provided an exciting spectacle for fans. Lando Norris, the McLaren driver, shared his insights after the thrilling race in Austria, where he achieved a respectable third place. Norris acknowledged that the winner of the sprint race demonstrated slightly superior speed compared to the McLaren team, despite crossing the finish line with a comfortable advantage of over 4.3 seconds.
Starting from the front row alongside Max Verstappen, Norris narrowly missed out on pole position by a tiny margin. Verstappen showed exceptional skill during Friday’s sessions, surpassing both drivers. The intense qualifying session set the stage for an exciting 100-kilometer race around the Red Bull Ring, where these talented drivers battled it out.
The sprint race began with Verstappen making a promising start, closely followed by Norris and Oscar Piastri. However, it was the three-time world champion who possessed the highest speed among the trio, leading every lap from start to finish to secure victory in the Austrian GP sprint race.
Reflecting on his performance, Norris acknowledged that although his pace was commendable, he couldn’t keep up with Verstappen’s speed. He emphasized the importance of a better start in Spielberg and praised the promising performance of the MCL38 at the Red Bull Ring. Norris and his teammate at McLaren are now aiming to excel in qualifying and the main race on Sunday, seeking to surpass Red Bull.
While Norris expressed some disappointment with his third place, Piastri also shared his thoughts on the 23-lap race. Starting from third position, Piastri managed to overtake his teammate and secure second place. Although satisfied with the points earned, he admitted that the team did not have the necessary pace for the end of the race. However, Piastri remains optimistic and sees the points earned as a significant advantage over rival teams.
During the sprint race, Norris and Verstappen engaged in a fierce battle for the lead, resulting in a late braking incident at turn four during the early stages. This incident provided an opportunity for Piastri to make a strong overtake on Norris. Despite this, Piastri acknowledged that McLaren did not have enough pace to secure victory in the sprint, leading him to settle for second place. While he aims for his first Formula 1 win, the Australian driver will strive to surpass Verstappen in the standings, aiming for a stronger start on Sunday.
