A Ferrari won the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race, with Nicklas Nielsen from Denmark crossing the finish line in first place. Nielsen drove the Ferrari 499P #50 hypercar alongside Antonio Fuoco from Italy and Miguel Molina from Spain. Despite running low on fuel, Nielsen managed to complete 311 laps on the Sarthe circuit. In second place, 14.221 seconds behind, was the Toyota GR010 hybrid #7, driven by Jose Maria Lopez from Argentina, Kamui Kobayashi from Japan, and Nyck de Vries from the Netherlands. This duo had the most Formula 1 experience among the competitors. Last year’s winners, Alessandro Pier Guidi and Antonio Giovinazzi from Italy, along with James Calado from Great Britain, finished in third place in the Ferrari #51. It was a historic victory for Ferrari, marking their first overall win at the French circuit in 58 years.
Nielsen displayed incredible skill and determination during his last three stints in the Ferrari #50. Despite facing challenges like a door problem and an investigation into an unsafe release during a pit stop, he managed to take the lead. The dangerous conditions in the final hours of the race made it even more challenging, but Nielsen was able to create a gap between him and the chasing pack, which had bunched up due to safety cars and earlier accidents.
The Toyota GR010 Hybrid Hypercar #7, driven by Jose-Maria Lopez, secured second place in the final exchanges. Despite his efforts, Lopez couldn’t close the gap to Nielsen and even had a brief spin during the race. However, he still managed to split the factory Ferraris 499P cars.
In the penultimate hour of the race, Pier Guidi collided with the Toyota GR010 #8 driven by Brendon Hartley at Mulsanne Corner. As a result, Pier Guidi received a 5-second penalty. He also faced pressure from Laurens Vanthoor in the Porsche #6 in the final 20 minutes of the race. However, he successfully defended his position and secured fourth place, with Vanthoor finishing fifth.
The top six in the Hypercar category were completed by the Toyota #8 in fifth place and the Porsche Penske 963 #5 in sixth. The Cadillac #2 finished seventh, followed by the Hertz Team Jota #12 in eighth, the Hertz Team Jota #38 in ninth, and the Lamborghini Iron Lynx #63 in tenth.
The Hertz Team JOTA team achieved a 1-2 victory in the FIA Hypercar World Cup. They were followed by the Proton Competition Peugeot TotalEnergies team in 11th and 12th place, with car #94 leading car #93.
The Manthey EMA Porsche 911 RSR 911 LMGT3, driven by Morris Schuring, Yasser Shahin, and Richard Lietz, achieved a historic victory at Le Mans by becoming the first winners in the LMGT3 category. Schuring, at only 19 years old, also becomes the youngest winner in the history of the category!
Following their successful performance at Spa last month, the team showed flawless execution throughout the 24-hour race.
Lietz, the most experienced driver among the 186 participants at Le Mans with 18 previous starts, crossed the finish line ahead of the BMW #31 from Team WRT, driven by Darren Leung, Augusto Farfus, and Sean Gelael.
Securing a podium position at Le Mans is the Proton Competition Ford Mustang LMGT3 #88, driven by Dennis Olsen, Giorgio Roda, and Mikkel Pedersen. This achievement marks the first podium position for a Mustang at La Sarthe.
The top six in the LMGT3 category are completed by the Proton Ford Mustang #44 in 4th place, the Lamborghini Iron Dames #85 in 5th place, and the Ferrari VISTA AF Corse #55 in 6th place.
Unfortunately, the GR Racing Ferrari 296 LMGT3, driven by Daniel Serra, Riccardo Pera, and Michael Wainwright, suffered a disappointment when the car stopped at the pit exit with only 33 minutes remaining. At that time, they were in sixth place.
The LMP2 category, with the Oreca-Gibson cars from a single manufacturer, proves once again to be open and unpredictable. Throughout the 24 hours, several teams play a significant role in the competition. Initially, poleman Louis Delétraz in his AO by TF Oreca 07-Gibson #14 takes the lead.
However, as the race progresses and different teams employ different strategies, the hierarchy changes. The Vector Sport #10 (Ryan Cullen/Patrick Pilet/Stéphane Richelmi) and the AF Corse #183 (François Perrodo/Ben Barnicoat/Nicolas Varrone) emerge as leaders.
Despite a challenging first stint for Ben Keating, who is accompanied by Filipe Albuquerque and Ben Hanley, the team proves prominent and ultimately victorious.
On Sunday, the Inter Europol Competition (#34) and Cool Racing (#37) teams stand out. However, it is the United Autosports #22 of Oliver Jarvis, Bijoy Garg, and Nolan Siegel that claims the greatest honors for the first time since 2020.
