Manchester United has reportedly ended a £2.16 million-a-year ambassadorial contract with Sir Alex Ferguson as new minority owners Ineos, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, focus on drastic cost-cutting measures. This move concludes Ferguson’s long-standing role as global club ambassador, a position he held since retiring in 2013 after his legendary 26-year tenure, during which he delivered 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League wins. The termination was said to be amicable, with Ferguson staying on as a non-executive director and welcome at games.
The budget overhaul comes as Ratcliffe pushes to streamline United’s finances. After a comprehensive financial review, Ineos has already implemented sweeping changes across the club, including over 250 staff redundancies and cuts to perks for senior employees, such as scrapping company-paid transport to events, complimentary matchday meals, and pre-match gatherings. Even the annual Christmas party has been axed as Ineos refocuses spending on the playing squad.
Ratcliffe, who once hailed Ferguson as “an essential part of Man United’s history,” called the decision a necessary part of reining in a perceived culture of overspending.
