The Toronto Maple Leafs are exploring trade options to strengthen their blue line after dropping their season opener. One intriguing proposal circulating online through PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool suggests that the Leafs could acquire Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen in exchange for former first-round pick Timothy Liljegren and a draft pick.
Ristolainen, a physical, right-shot defenseman, is entering the third year of his five-year, $25.5 million contract with the Flyers. Known for his defensive presence, Ristolainen could slot into Toronto’s third line, filling a role Liljegren was initially projected for. However, Liljegren, who recently signed a two-year, $6 million extension with the Leafs, has fallen down Toronto’s depth chart, even becoming a healthy scratch in Game 1.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Leafs are actively searching for a new landing spot for Liljegren, writing, “Sounds like Toronto is working to find a landing spot for Timothy Liljegren. He’s down the depth chart, not a situation anyone is happy with.” Leafs coach Craig Berube has also expressed dissatisfaction with Liljegren’s performance, advising him to simplify his game and play “a little bit heavier in his battles.”
For the Flyers, adding Liljegren would bring youth and depth to their blue line. General Manager Daniel Briere emphasized that Philadelphia’s success hinges on consistency from players like Ristolainen, Morgan Frost, and Joel Farabee. Swapping Ristolainen for Liljegren could provide Philadelphia with a younger, developing defenseman who may benefit from more consistent ice time.
Though a deal hasn’t materialized, the trade could be a win-win. The Leafs would add a seasoned, physical blueliner to complement their defense, while the Flyers gain a young player hungry to prove himself. As both teams look to push further this season, this potential move is one to watch as trade talks evolve.
