Mercedes-Benz has revealed new data about the next generation of the CLA, showing what the future range of compact models from the Star brand will look like.
It is already known that the new CLA will debut the new Mercedes Modular (MMA) platform, as well as incorporate the powertrain technology from the Vision EQXX, featuring an 800 V system and a silicon carbide (SiC) inverter.
The new fully electric compact vehicle, developed entirely by Mercedes-Benz engineers, has a power output of 272 hp and is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PSM) on the rear axle, meaning rear-wheel drive, along with a SiC inverter for efficient energy use.
Regarding the 4MATIC models, which feature all-wheel drive, they additionally have a motor on the front axle, with a power output of 109 hp, which is also equipped with a SiC inverter.
The result is that the electric powertrain, as demonstrated in the Concept CLA, aims for a range of over 750 kilometers in the WLTP cycle. With an efficiency of 93%, it also offers exceptional everyday range for longer trips. The two-speed gearbox in the main transmission on the rear axle not only increases efficiency but also allows for extremely dynamic driving performance.
To achieve the announced range, the CLA will feature a battery with a higher usable energy storage capacity of 85 kWh, which has anodes where silicon oxide is added to graphite.
According to Mercedes, compared to conventional graphite anode batteries, the specific energy is up to 20% higher. At the cell level, the volumetric energy density of the cell chemistry is 680 Wh/l. The use of raw materials has been further optimized.
The new battery allows for high-power DC charging of up to 320 kW. In the Concept CLA, this would correspond to a range of up to 300 kilometers.
The hybrid variants will be equipped with a 48 V electrical system, featuring an electric motor with a power output of up to 27 hp and an inverter integrated into a new eight-speed dual-clutch electrified transmission. For these variants, Mercedes-Benz has developed a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine. Initially, the hybrid variants will offer three power levels: 136, 163, or 190 hp.
