Italian racing sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes’ newest young talent, has expressed that it would be a “dream” to win a few races in his debut Formula 1 season. Set to join the prestigious Silver Arrows team in 2025, Antonelli, at just 18 years old, is already making waves in the motorsport world.
Currently competing in Formula 2 with Prema Racing, Antonelli has shown immense potential, earning 113 points so far in the championship. His promotion to Mercedes’ F1 team is a testament to his rapid rise and the confidence the Brackley-based outfit has in his abilities.
Antonelli has made it clear that his goal is to not just compete but to win at the pinnacle of motorsport. Despite acknowledging the immense challenge of racing in F1, the ambitious young driver is determined to aim high from the very start of his career.
“Certainly, winning a few races would be a dream,” Antonelli said. “It won’t be easy because all the teams have competitive cars, so it will be very difficult, but this is my first goal. Even a few podiums would be good, but the main goal is to bring home some victories.”
As Antonelli prepares for his first season, former AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost weighed in on the young star’s future. Tost believes that Antonelli has the speed and talent to excel in Formula 1, but emphasized the importance of Mercedes nurturing the Italian in a careful and structured way.
“It’s always a little bit difficult for a young driver to come into a works team, especially to a team like Mercedes,” Tost commented. “But I’m sure that Toto [Wolff, Mercedes boss] and his team will prepare him in the best possible way for the next season. From the driving [side], I think it’s absolutely no problem for him. He’s fast, he’s highly skilled, and he will show a good performance.”
With Mercedes focusing on cultivating a youthful lineup, Antonelli’s arrival marks a key step in their bid to reclaim their former dominance in Formula 1. If they can harness the immense potential of the young Italian, Antonelli could be a cornerstone of Mercedes’ future success.
