As the 2024 Formula 1 season wraps up, Mercedes is shifting its priorities away from immediate performance gains and focusing instead on experimenting with ideas for 2025. For Lewis Hamilton, who will be joining Ferrari next season, this decision means his final races with Mercedes won’t be about securing wins but rather about gathering crucial data.
Mercedes’ engineering director Andrew Shovlin confirmed that the last three races will serve as a testing ground for new development concepts. “The big focus in these remaining races for us is learning what we can. We are in a position in the championship where we cannot challenge in front of us,” Shovlin explained, adding that their goal is to identify and address lingering performance issues for next season.
Hamilton, who has endured a mixed season with standout moments at the British and Belgian GPs, has faced a particularly challenging time as the W15’s lack of pace on high-speed circuits and in qualifying continues to hamper his results. His recent Brazilian GP run was notably frustrating, with the track’s bumpy nature highlighting the car’s limitations.
For Mercedes, these final races offer a chance to gain valuable insights into the car’s weaknesses, especially in unpredictable weather conditions like those at Interlagos. Shovlin added, “We are going to be looking at all the remaining tracks to assess performance…and whether the changes we are hoping to make for next year are going to improve those areas.”
Despite a season marked by challenges, Hamilton remains loyal to the Mercedes brand, expressing that he “still loves” the team even as he prepares to race for Ferrari in 2025. “We’re still in love. I haven’t lost faith in the team. I’m just leaving for myself,” Hamilton shared, reaffirming the bond he’s formed with the team over the past decade.
As Hamilton’s 11-year journey with Mercedes nears its end, he’s managed two wins, while his teammate has claimed one. Although he may have hoped to end his tenure on a high note, the focus on future development now overshadows his individual ambitions. However, Hamilton’s determination to close out the season with resilience will undoubtedly be on display in these final races.
