Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg recently disclosed that he was unaware of the significant changes happening within the German camp. Audi, a major player in the automotive industry, announced its intention to join the Formula 1 grid in 2022 with a factory engine workforce. Their goal was to establish themselves as a formidable force in the sport by 2026. However, the project faced setbacks when the Sauber team encountered critical challenges, resulting in the dismissal of key personnel. Reflecting on the upheaval within the Audi project, Hulkenberg admitted that he had no prior knowledge of the dramatic events unfolding behind the scenes.
The Audi Group had initially planned to enter the championship due to the global popularity of Formula 1. They gained attention when they announced their collaboration with Sauber. However, the situation changed when Audi acquired full ownership of the Swiss manufacturer and took control of their Formula 1 project.
Unfortunately, the project faced further complications when two key members were removed from their positions over the past few weekends. Their roles were subsequently filled by other team members, including Hulkenberg, who made a comeback to the Formula 1 grid. Despite being a future driver for the team, Hulkenberg claimed that he was unaware of the turmoil within Audi. He emphasized that being privy to the plans of rival teams would be a conflict of interest and could be seen as disloyalty towards his current employer, Haas. Therefore, he stated that his focus remains solely on Haas for the remainder of the season, and he is not involved in the Audi project.
While the recent dismissals of key personnel may indicate internal issues within the team, Audi has a reputation for excelling in motorsport regulations on their first attempt. Witnessing such significant changes reaffirms the seriousness of their Formula 1 endeavor, which instills confidence in Hulkenberg regarding the project’s progress.
The German driver expressed that he is not concerned about the commotion happening behind the scenes. He acknowledged that the team needs to address certain issues but believes there is still a long way to go and that they are heading in the right direction.
In addition to his thoughts on the Audi project, it is worth noting that Hulkenberg currently holds the 11th position in the standings. With a total of 27 points, he has made the most of the opportunities presented to him. Therefore, Audi can expect to have a highly skilled driver in Hulkenberg, who can potentially make a significant impact in the championship.
