Novak Djokovic has achieved an incredible feat by winning the Gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Sunday (August 4). The Serbian tennis player fulfilled his long-held dream of claiming an Olympic gold medal with a straight-set victory over Carlos Alcaraz. Djokovic triumphed in two tiebreak sets, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2), completing his collection of all the major tennis honors. Despite this historic accomplishment, Djokovic shows no signs of slowing down.
In a press conference following the match, the 37-year-old revealed his plans to compete in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. This ambitious goal would require a tremendous effort from Djokovic, who will be 41 years old at the time. However, as fans have witnessed throughout his career, it would be unwise to underestimate him. If he manages to participate in the Los Angeles Olympics, Djokovic will aim to become only the second player, after Andy Murray, to secure back-to-back Olympic singles gold medals. It is worth noting that Murray’s career came to an end at the Paris Olympics following a loss in the men’s doubles with Dan Evans. Novak Djokovic, the top seed, emerged victorious against Carlos Alcaraz with a 7-6, 7-6 scoreline to claim his first Olympic Singles Gold medal. This victory adds to Djokovic’s overall Olympic medal count, as he previously won the bronze medal in Beijing 16 years ago. The match showcased the resilience of both Djokovic and Alcaraz. Despite numerous breakpoints, the first set remarkably reached a tiebreak without any breaks of serve. Notable moments included Alcaraz saving three break points in the fourth game and Djokovic surviving five break points in the ninth game.
Djokovic had a set point in the first set but was unable to convert. However, he remained composed and won four consecutive points in the tiebreak to take the lead on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The second set provided fewer opportunities for breaks, but the level of play remained high. Djokovic’s ability to vary his pace kept Alcaraz on his toes, while the Spaniard showcased his shotmaking skills. The 24-time Grand Slam champion capitalized on errors from Alcaraz and hit winners, including a crucial cross-court forehand in the tiebreak. The Belgrade native then won four consecutive points to secure the victory.
