Tragedy struck near Tennessee State University (TSU) in Nashville on Saturday evening, as gunfire erupted during a homecoming event, leaving one dead and nine others injured. The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) reported the incident took place shortly after 5 p.m. near Jefferson Street and 27th Street. In a swift response, officials confirmed the scene was secure and that all victims had been transported to nearby hospitals.
The deceased has been identified as a 24-year-old man, and three of the injured are juveniles with non-critical injuries. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with more than half a dozen shots ringing out, causing people to dive for cover. Some victims were carried away on stretchers, while five were transported to hospitals by the Nashville Fire Department and five others arrived via private vehicles. At least one of the injured is suspected to have been involved in the shooting.
The university promptly alerted students about the active shooter, advising them to stay away from the area. Initial reports suggest that two suspects, both black men, may have fled the scene in a Ford Fusion. As responders, including those from the Nashville Fire Department who were present for the TSU homecoming parade, jumped into action, some improvised tourniquets using their belts.
