Veteran infielder Pablo Reyes, who played for both the Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets in 2024, has officially elected free agency. The 31-year-old journeyman, known for his versatility across the infield, now seeks a new opportunity after a roller-coaster couple of seasons.
Reyes had a promising run with the Red Sox in 2023, joining the team in May after a cash trade from the Oakland A’s. He quickly made his mark, hitting .287 with a .339 OBP and a .716 OPS over 64 games, proving to be a reliable contributor to Boston’s roster. However, 2024 told a different story. Reyes struggled in limited action, batting just .183 with a .234 OBP in 21 games before being outrighted to the minors.
After a brief stint with Boston’s Triple-A affiliate, Reyes was traded to the Mets, where he spent most of the year with their minor league team, the Syracuse Mets. In Syracuse, Reyes regained some of his form, slashing .290/.371/.864 across 63 games. Despite his success in the minors, his major league time with the Mets was fleeting, appearing in just one game as a pinch-runner without recording a plate appearance.
Reyes’ departure from the Mets comes after being designated for assignment on September 9. He now enters free agency as a seasoned utility player, capable of filling in at multiple infield spots, offering potential value to teams in need of depth.
With experience in the majors dating back to 2018, Reyes may attract interest from teams looking for a versatile, low-cost veteran option to shore up their roster. Wherever he ends up, Reyes is likely hoping for more consistent playing time to prove his worth.
