The Green Bay Packers made the “difficult decision” to suspend wide receiver Romeo Doubs for Sunday’s Week 5 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. The move came after reports surfaced earlier this week that the third-year wideout had skipped multiple practices, seemingly frustrated with his involvement in the team’s offense.
In a statement on the Packers’ official website, general manager Brian Gutekunst expressed disappointment in having to resort to this action but emphasized the team’s confidence in moving forward positively.
“Unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to suspend Romeo for this week’s game,” Gutekunst said. “His decisions and actions during the week negatively impacted the team and required us to take this action. While we are certainly disappointed, we are confident that we will be able to move forward in a positive manner. Romeo is a valuable member of our team and we look forward to welcoming him back next week.”
While Gutekunst did not specify the details of Doubs’ infraction, reports suggest the wide receiver’s frustration stemmed from a perceived lack of involvement in Green Bay’s offensive scheme. After a breakout 2023 season, where Doubs logged 674 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, he has seen a reduced role in 2024. In four games this season, Doubs has 169 receiving yards on 20 targets, second on the team. It is worth noting that starting quarterback Jordan Love missed two games due to injury, accounting for a chunk of those missed targets.
Despite the suspension, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that “things have moved in a positive direction,” confirming that Doubs will return to the team next week.
As the Packers prepare to face the Rams, quarterback Jordan Love will lean on the rest of his receiver corps, which includes Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks, and Jayden Reed. The trio has combined for 520 yards and six touchdowns so far this season, providing solid options in Doubs’ absence.
The suspension of Doubs, though a blow to the Packers’ receiving unit, is expected to be a temporary setback as the team looks to get back on track in Week 6.
