Patrick Mahomes is embracing the idea of being a villain, even though nobody actually sees him that way. This Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs will go head-to-head with the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. While the game promises to be exciting, there has been a lot of non-football related talk surrounding it. From constant coverage of Taylor Swift to rumors about Mahomes’ dad getting a DUI, the focus on football seems to have taken a backseat at times.
Mahomes believes that people don’t like him and that he might have to embrace the role of a villain, even though no one is asking him to. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, he expressed his thoughts on the matter, saying, “I can definitely sense it. I never felt like that because I’ve never been like that in my entire life. But it’s become a little bit funny. I don’t want to say you enjoy it. I know the Patriots had that for a while. I’m hoping we do it in a different way with a little bit more fun and personality with it. But as long as you keep winning, teams start to not like you, and I want to keep winning. So if that means some of the other teams and other fan bases aren’t going to like me, I’ll try to still have a smile on my face and not be a bad example, but I can be that villain for them if they need me to be.”
However, the notion that Mahomes is a villain is simply not true. Serious NFL fans do not view him that way. In fact, the general narrative surrounding Mahomes is quite the opposite. He is widely regarded as one of the most talented quarterbacks in league history, but there are certain individuals around him who attract negative attention. His wife, Brittany, often plays the victim card, and his brother Jackson can be quite insufferable. While some may dislike the Chiefs due to the circus surrounding the team, labeling Mahomes as a villain is far-fetched. Just listen to his voice – it’s far from intimidating. The idea that anyone would see him as a villain is laughable.
Instead of focusing on this villain persona, Mahomes should just concentrate on playing football. It has served him well thus far, and it could lead to his third ring on Sunday.
