Coach Jerod Mayo Voices Frustration Over Missed Call as Maye Eyes Comeback Against the Titans
New England Patriots fans can breathe a sigh of relief as promising rookie quarterback Drake Maye appears to be on track to play in Week 9 after a concussion scare sidelined him in their recent win over the New York Jets. Maye, who left the game after a hit to the back of the head, has been progressing in concussion protocol, with Patriots insider Mike Reiss reporting positive updates from practice this week. According to Reiss, Maye was a limited participant for the second straight day on Thursday—an encouraging sign for the Patriots’ upcoming matchup with the Tennessee Titans.
Maye’s head injury placed him in the NFL’s strict concussion protocol earlier this week, leaving his status for Sunday’s game uncertain. However, NFL insider Josina Anderson confirmed that Maye continues to participate in limited practice sessions, keeping his chances for a return alive. Head coach Jerod Mayo, standing by his young quarterback, expressed disappointment in the officiating over what he believed was a missed penalty on the hit by Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood. “They didn’t call it,” Mayo said, admitting he had ongoing conversations with the referees throughout the game.
Following the hit, Maye stayed in for four more plays before being sent to the blue medical tent and, subsequently, the locker room for further evaluation. Mayo shared that Maye, a fierce competitor, wanted to return to the game but respected the league’s concussion protocol. “The competitor that he is, obviously he wanted to go back out there and play. But there’s a protocol that he has to go through,” Mayo explained.
If Maye can clear protocol in time, he’ll be back under center against Tennessee, a matchup that will allow him to resume his promising rookie campaign. For Patriots fans, his potential return is a hopeful development as the team fights to gain momentum in the AFC.
