Piastri conquered his second podium of the season by securing second place in Austria.
Oscar Piastri confessed that the controversy surrounding track limits, which resulted in the loss of third place on the grid, motivated him to cross the field and claim second place in the Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
As the closest competitor to Red Bull, McLaren maintained its position at the Red Bull Ring, with Lando Norris pressuring Max Verstappen and causing a collision between the two drivers.
Piastri could have taken advantage of their fight if his fastest time in qualifying had not been invalidated due to a track limits violation at Turn 6.
Instead, George Russell, in a Mercedes, took the victory, while Piastri made a late overtake on Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari, recovering from seventh place at the start to finish second.
“I’m mostly pleased,” reflected Piastri. “The first part of the race didn’t yield as much progress as I had hoped.
“Obviously, I had a little incident at Turn 1 and then overheated the tires a bit. And with the turbulent air, it was extremely difficult to maintain a one-second gap.
“So yeah, there wasn’t much progress there. But in the next two parts of the race, things really started to improve.
“I stayed out longer on track during the two pit stops and yeah, it felt like we needed a few more laps at the end, unfortunately.
“But overall, starting from 7th position, it was a good turnaround. Yeah, I’m quite pleased.”
Piastri was involved in a three-way incident at Turn 1 of the first lap with Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez, resulting in damage to the Ferrari driver’s wing.
The Australian pilot revealed that he also suffered minor damage to his car because of the near accident and reported another tense moment with Perez later in the lap.
“I didn’t have the best start, but I saw an opportunity on the outside and, yes, I braked very late,” he recalled.
“I couldn’t really see where Checo was on the inside, but I didn’t think he was so close to Charles. But the three of us met at the apex.
“So, yes, I was lucky. I think there was some damage, but nothing serious.
“I had a little more contact with Checo later in the lap. So, yes, it was a busy race.”
Piastri used his newer tires in the final moments to position himself behind Sainz at Turn 4 and then overtook the Spaniard on the outside at Turn 6 to secure second place.
“Yes, Turn 6 was a successful area for me this weekend,” he commented. “I believe I made three maneuvers there on the outside.
“Yes, it was very close when we approached Turn 4, but I had better traction on the outside of Turn 6 and managed to make it happen. So, I’m quite satisfied with that.”
However, Piastri admitted that the result was somewhat bitter, as he lamented the small track limits infringement that prevented him from securing his first victory.
When asked if he was still frustrated with the track limits incident, Piastri replied: “Yes, for sure.
“I was quite upset yesterday because, you know, there are so many corners. We made changes to the track here to address the track limits issue.
“But for some reason, in this particular corner, we moved the white line, but not enough.
“But in the end, I went a little off track and, you know, it was my mistake or, you know, that’s what it was.
“But after seeing the evidence of my comeback being deleted from a helicopter camera with questionable resolution, yes, that hurt a lot.
“So, I went into the race with a bit of determination. So, I think some of my overtakes probably came from a greater distance than they would have otherwise.”
