World Formula E Championship decided in London after Antonio Felix da Costa’s dominant performance in Portland
The FIA World Formula E Championship will come to an exciting conclusion in London after Antonio Felix da Costa’s impressive victory in the second race of the Portland E-Prix weekend. Da Costa’s win in the US marks his third consecutive victory, solidifying his position as the driver to beat in the championship.
Pascal Wehrlein’s hopes of challenging for the win were dashed early on when he lost his front wing. This allowed his Tag Heuer Porsche teammate to take up the fight for victory. Envision’s Robin Frijns provided a strong challenge, securing his second consecutive podium.
Despite intense racing and incidents that caused damage to many drivers’ cars, Mitch Evans managed to stay out of trouble and secure third place. Wehrlein, despite his setbacks, still managed to salvage fourth place and earn valuable points in the championship. Jaguar TCS Racing’s Nick Cassidy, on the other hand, had a tough race and didn’t score any points, allowing Evans to join the title fight by tying with Wehrlein in the standings.
Jean-Eric Vergne, who started on pole position, struggled to maintain his challenge and finished in fifth place. Nico Müller, Norman Nato, Max Günther, Sébastien Buemi, and Jake Dennis completed the top ten finishers.
With Cassidy’s disappointing weekend, Evans’ podium finish, and Wehrlein’s ability to limit the damage, both the Drivers’ and Teams’ Championships will be decided in the final weekend of the season in London, three weeks from now.
Antonio Felix da Costa secures third consecutive victory in Portland, extending lead in the championship
Antonio Felix da Costa continued his remarkable winning streak by securing his third consecutive victory in Portland. The Portuguese driver dominated the race, leaving his competitors behind and further solidifying his lead in the championship standings.
The race began with Da Costa overtaking Jean-Eric Vergne at Turn 1 to take the lead. Nick Cassidy lost position to Pascal Wehrlein, while Robin Frijns quickly climbed to third place. Frijns faced intense pressure from Sam Bird, who managed to temporarily regain the position before his teammate, Jake Hughes, took the lead at the start of the second lap. Hughes was closely followed by Nyck de Vries, with Vergne dropping to fifth and Da Costa in sixth.
Cassidy seemed content to bide his time and dropped to 18th place on the third lap. Hughes, De Vries, and Da Costa activated their first Attack Mode, allowing Vergne to regain the lead. Bird’s position began to drop, and Hughes reclaimed the lead, with Vergne dropping to third after using his first Attack Mode. Hughes activated his second Attack Mode on the fifth lap, while Edoardo Mortara rose to fourth place and De Vries dropped to seventh.
Wehrlein, who had been performing well in fourth place, suffered a setback when he lost his front wing on the sixth lap. This caused him to plummet in the rankings. Bird also lost his front wing, causing him to go off track and fall to the back of the pack. Wehrlein’s dislodged wing collided with Bird’s car, leaving the English driver frustrated with Wehrlein’s failure to stop and change the wing. Despite the damage, Wehrlein found himself only two positions ahead of Cassidy, who chose not to engage in the early stages of the race.
The race leader, Hughes, made a mistake at Turn 1 on the eighth lap, allowing Buemi to take the lead. However, the Swiss driver quickly received a drive-through penalty for a technical infringement. Vergne regained the lead on the ninth lap, with Müller impressively in second place. Jules Günther also joined the leaders in fourth place.
Wehrlein struggled to recover and climbed to seventh place at the start of the 11th lap, despite the front part of his car missing. Müller was now in the lead, but Frijns quickly overtook him after activating his second Attack Mode.
The race became increasingly chaotic, with Hughes, Caio Collet, De Vries, Cassidy, and Mortara involved in incidents and forced to pit for repairs. This left Wehrlein in third place, with Frijns and Da Costa battling for the lead. Vergne, Mortara, and the ABT Cupra duo, Müller and Lucas di Grassi, remained within reach. However, Mortara’s race effectively ended at the end of the 15th lap after colliding with Da Costa and suffering a puncture.
Vergne regained the lead, with Da Costa in second place. Da Costa also lost a piece of his front wing due to contact with Mortara. In the midfield, Nato and Günther, who started from the back of the grid, made impressive progress and found themselves in eighth and tenth place, respectively. Evans, who managed to avoid trouble in the first half of the race, climbed to fifth place.
Increasing debris on the track forced Race Director Scott Elkins to deploy the Safety Car, giving Cassidy a chance to recover from his compromised race.
The Safety Car returned to the pits at the end of the 20th lap, and Da Costa immediately took the lead from Frijns. Wehrlein held onto third place. Evans activated his second Attack Mode, dropping to eighth place, but quickly overtook Nato to move up to seventh.
With an additional lap added, Da Costa briefly dropped to third place before regaining the lead. Evans continued his ascent and battled with Wehrlein for third place, managing to overtake him at the start of the 23rd lap. Cassidy, despite having more energy than his rivals, remained stuck in 15th place.
At the start of the final lap, Frijns reclaimed second place from Evans, while Wehrlein held onto fourth place but began to fall behind the top three. Da Costa maintained his lead and received approval from the Porsche pit wall to go for the win.
In the final lap, Da Costa narrowly held off Frijns’ relentless pursuit to secure his third consecutive victory in Formula E. Evans finished in third place, with Wehrlein managing to maintain fourth place and secure valuable points. Cassidy, unfortunately, did not score points despite his energy advantage.
During the cooldown lap, Da Costa expressed his satisfaction with his performance and his willingness to support Wehrlein. His dominant display in Portland certainly impressed Porsche team boss Florian Modlinger, making Da Costa the top choice for the team.
