Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed on Friday that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has proposed new ideas to revive Black Sea shipping routes. However, Putin emphasized that while he hasn’t yet reviewed the details, any agreement will require “realities” to be acknowledged, signaling that concessions to Ukraine are off the table.
Erdogan’s push aims to ease naval restrictions in the Black Sea, a region destabilized by military conflict since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Turkey and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres have long supported a pathway for safe merchant navigation, underscoring the strategic and economic value of free passage in the region. The initiative follows the 2022 Black Sea Grain Initiative, which secured safe transit for over 33 million metric tons of Ukrainian grain, an essential lifeline during the conflict.
“We’ve never refused discussions,” Putin stated, referencing prior agreements mediated by Turkey and the UN. However, as he considers Erdogan’s proposals, Putin remains resolute that any deal will have to account for Russia’s demands, a clear indication of Moscow’s hardline stance on Ukraine.
