Former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan isn’t holding back his feelings about the team’s current struggles, nor his desire to step back into his old role. Following the Jets’ disappointing 25-22 Week 8 loss to the New England Patriots, Ryan made it clear that he’d return to coach the Jets “in a second” if given the opportunity.
The Jets brought Ryan on as their head coach in 2009, where he led them to two consecutive AFC Championship games in his first two seasons, marking the franchise’s most successful period since the 2000s. Under his leadership, the Jets achieved 11 wins in 2010, a feat they haven’t matched since. After six seasons with the Jets, he moved on to coach the Buffalo Bills in 2016, his last season in the NFL.
On ESPN Radio, Ryan’s passion for the team was evident. “I’d do it in a second because I am a New York Jet. I absolutely would. I tell the damn truth, and I speak as a fan of this football team. That’s why it makes sense. I hope I get an opportunity to interview for it,” he said, emphasizing his deep-rooted connection to the franchise.
While Ryan’s tenure as a head coach was defined by his strong defense and his players’ loyalty, his return would pose the challenge of adapting to an NFL that’s evolved significantly since his departure. However, his unmistakable passion for the Jets could bring a spark to a team that has struggled to find a leader with the same level of commitment.
Whether or not Ryan will get a shot to revive the Jets remains uncertain, but his love for the team and desire to bring it back to prominence are undeniable.
