2023 Super Bowl Champion Chiefs’ Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy Faces Uncertain Future
After leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory last year, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was expected to be a top candidate for head coaching positions across the NFL. However, his career took an unexpected turn when he joined the coaching staff of the Washington Commanders as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator under Ron Rivera. Now, after a disappointing 2023 season, Bieniemy finds himself replaced by Kliff Kingsbury and without a coaching job.
The decision to leave the Chiefs and join the struggling Washington staff has proven to be ill-fated for Bieniemy. With Kingsbury taking over as offensive coordinator and new head coach Dan Quinn making it clear that Bieniemy will not be part of the coaching staff moving forward, questions arise about the wisdom of his move. Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III expressed his disbelief on Twitter, stating, “Eric Bieniemy not being a Head Coach after 2 Super Bowls and 7 straight AFC West titles in Kansas City is STILL BAFFLING.”
Despite his impressive track record and the recent abundance of head coaching vacancies, Bieniemy has been unable to secure a leadership role on an NFL sideline. As the 2024 season approaches, he remains unemployed, waiting for another opportunity to arise. It is a disappointing outcome for a coach who was once touted as a potential head coach just over a year ago.
It remains to be seen when Bieniemy will have another chance to prove himself as a head coach in the NFL. For now, he joins the ranks of talented coaches who must patiently wait for the right opportunity to come their way.
