Oliver Rowland, from Nissan, reflected on his catastrophe on the last lap that deprived him of what could have been a second victory in two races in Misano, acknowledging that he is still in the championship fight this year.
The New Yorker was leading on the last lap before a power cut left him sliding, handing the victory to Pascal Wehrlein, from Tag Heuer Porsche.
Rowland revealed: “It was a software procedure that was overlooked at the start,” also stating: “when I crossed the start line, it counted one lap less than it should have, so I had one less lap for the rest of the race.”
It wasn’t all bad for Rowland this weekend, as he was awarded the win of race one on Saturday night, after Antonio Felix da Costa’s dramatic disqualification.
This granted him his fourth consecutive podium appearance this season, solidifying his position in the Drivers’ Championship battle. Disregarding any doubts on Friday, Rowland confessed on Saturday that, despite finding it “hard to believe,” he and his team “must start to consider themselves as contenders.”
After Sunday, Rowland seemed more confident than ever in his chances of claiming the title.
“I think it caught us a little off guard, I knew the team was talented and the package was strong, but I didn’t expect it to be so exceptional! We have some areas that need improvement, but we are on the hunt.”
