New research reveals that Russia is amplifying false claims about Hurricane Helene’s devastation and the federal government’s response, aiming to deepen divisions among Americans ahead of the 2024 presidential election. According to the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, Russian state media and social media networks have been spreading disinformation, portraying the federal response as incompetent and corrupt.
“They’re pouring gasoline on fires that already exist,” said Melanie Smith, ISD’s director of research. This manipulation has even led to threats against FEMA workers in North Carolina, temporarily pausing recovery efforts.
Russian disinformation tactics have included the use of AI-generated images and fake accounts to circulate misleading content, targeting platforms like X (formerly Twitter). Experts warn this surge in propaganda is part of Moscow’s strategy to support Donald Trump’s candidacy and weaken U.S. support for Ukraine.
The campaign has spread false claims ranging from FEMA misallocating funds to aiding migrants, to bizarre weather manipulation conspiracies. U.S. intelligence has warned that “unwitting Americans” are sharing this disinformation, helping Russia drive its divisive agenda.
As election day approaches, experts fear that this disinformation could significantly undermine public trust in the government and election process, with potential long-term consequences for U.S. democracy.
