The toll of Russia’s war in Ukraine is staggering—and it’s only getting worse. Since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Russia has reportedly lost an astonishing 675,800 troops. That’s right, 675,800—an entire army of lives lost in less than two years, according to the latest report from Ukraine’s General Staff on October 18. And the casualties keep piling up. Just in the past 24 hours, Russia lost another 1,530 soldiers, showing no signs of slowing down in what has become a grinding war of attrition.
But the toll doesn’t stop with human losses. Russia’s military hardware has also taken a devastating hit. The Ukrainian report details that Moscow has seen the destruction of 9,027 tanks—yes, nine thousand! Add to that 18,053 armored fighting vehicles, 19,533 artillery systems, and 26,908 vehicles and fuel tanks. In the skies and on the seas, the situation isn’t much better for Russia. They’ve lost 369 airplanes, 329 helicopters, and 17,152 drones—yes, drones are now a key part of modern warfare, and Russia is hemorrhaging them too. Even their fleet has been crippled, with 28 ships and boats destroyed, along with one submarine. Not to mention 978 air defense systems and 1,232 multiple launch rocket systems that have been blown to bits.
These are not just numbers—they represent an incredible weakening of one of the world’s largest military forces. Yet Ukraine, with the support of its international allies, continues to defend its territory with fierce determination. This relentless effort has left Russia scrambling to recover from the heavy losses, both in manpower and military equipment.
The big question now: how long can Russia sustain these losses? And what will it take to bring this conflict to an end? Ukraine’s message is clear: “We’re not done yet.” The war grinds on, with no signs of slowing, and as Ukraine defends itself on all fronts, Russia’s losses are only set to increase. For now, it’s a war of endurance, and Ukraine seems to be holding stronger by the day.
