Oscar Piastri from Australia, driving for McLaren MCL38, and Carlos Sainz Jr from Spain, representing Ferrari SF-24, were involved in an incident during the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. The crash resulted in a penalty for Sainz, who was deemed responsible for the collision. As a result, he received a five-second penalty and dropped to fifth place, behind Sergio Perez. The incident occurred when Piastri pushed Sainz off the track at Turn 11, but it was at Turn 17, on lap 39, that the collision occurred. Piastri had to pit for repairs and finished outside the points in 13th, while Sainz continued and finished in fourth place. The stewards reviewed the video footage and concluded that Sainz was predominantly at fault for the collision. They noted that Sainz braked late, missed the ideal racing line, and lost control of the rear, resulting in the collision. However, they also acknowledged that Piastri had given enough space for the overtaking attempt.
