As October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month unfolds, tennis icon Serena Williams is once again lending her voice to a cause she’s championed before. Known for her impactful 2018 partnership with the I Touch Myself project, Williams used the campaign to encourage women worldwide to prioritize their health through early detection. The 23-time Grand Slam champion returned to social media this October 12 to echo her message, underscoring the importance of regular screenings in her signature, empowering style.
Back in 2018, Williams stepped outside her comfort zone by sharing a topless video on Instagram, lip-syncing to the Divinyls’ I Touch Myself, a song by the late Chrissy Amphlett, who died of breast cancer in 2013. “Early detection is key – it saves so many lives,” she said, hoping her message would serve as a crucial reminder for women of all backgrounds to prioritize regular screenings.
Early detection remains critical: According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer detected in its localized stage is a remarkable 99%. Monthly self-exams and regular mammograms can make all the difference, as Williams and fellow tennis great Martina Navratilova have both stressed. Navratilova, who was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram in 2010, has also shared her journey to recovery to emphasize the importance of regular check-ups.
Beyond health advocacy, Williams has spent years fighting for equality, women’s rights, and opportunities, both on and off the court. Through the Serena Williams Foundation, she promotes education for underserved communities, and her venture capital firm, Serena Ventures, backs women-led startups—54% of her investments have supported female founders.
Reflecting on her lifelong commitment to social causes, Williams famously said, “The day I stop fighting for equality and for people that look like you and me will be the day I’m in my grave.” Williams, who retired from professional tennis in 2022, continues to inspire and mobilize, encouraging women to support and lift one another. Her recent post, aimed at promoting breast cancer awareness, is yet another testament to her enduring commitment to making a positive impact.
