Jack Nicklaus made a surprise appearance at the PGA HOPE National Golf & Wellness Week on Sunday, joining veterans for a memorable putting contest and an insightful fireside chat with Fox News anchor Bret Baier. The legendary 18-time major champion, along with his wife, Barbara—known for her dedication to veterans as the 2019 PGA Distinguished Service Award winner—brought heart and humor to Congressional Country Club, where 19 veterans and two veteran squad leaders gathered from October 10-14.
The event, hosted by the PGA of America REACH Foundation, wasn’t just about improving swings. The veterans, who are graduates of the PGA HOPE program, received hands-on golf instruction and critical wellness training through the Cohen Veterans Network. Covering topics like stress management, public speaking, and mental health, the program’s goal is to boost veterans’ physical, social, and emotional well-being.
In his statement, Nicklaus expressed deep respect for the attendees, saying, “Our veterans have given so much for this country, and some have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom and safety, so it’s an honor, alongside Barbara, to continue to support them through PGA HOPE National Golf & Wellness Week. Their courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment are the true embodiment of our nation. Supporting our veterans isn’t just our duty; it’s a privilege we should all cherish.”
To further Nicklaus’s vision, a generous $2 million donation was made in his honor by real estate investor and fellow PGA REACH Trustee, David P. O’Connor. This commitment will continue to support the PGA HOPE program, which connects veterans to golf as a path toward wellness, taught by PGA professionals trained in adaptive techniques and military cultural awareness.
Through this flagship program, Nicklaus and the PGA Foundation are making a meaningful impact—both on the green and in the lives of those who served.
