The 2024 NASCAR Cup season would have taken a different turn had Joe Gibbs Racing still employed Kyle Busch as their driver. After 15 years of dedicated service, which resulted in two championships and approximately 200 victories across all three national series, Busch departed from the Toyota powerhouse team in 2023. He made the move to RCR, where he took the wheel of the iconic No:8 car. Despite initially experiencing success with three race wins, Busch has since encountered a rough patch that has extended into the 2024 season.
Both Kyle Busch and Toyota are feeling the absence of the seasoned driver, as JGR finds itself in an advantageous position to secure the championship this season. Recently, the president of TRD spoke with MBC about the team and acknowledged the significant impact of Busch’s departure on his organization. He openly admitted that losing Busch was a devastating blow for the team, with no silver linings to be found. The loss of Busch not only deprived them of a strong presence in the playoffs but also dealt a crushing blow to their overall organization. Additionally, the departure of Busch’s Truck Series team KBM was an undeniable and significant loss.
During the conversation, the top Toyota racing executive also addressed certain conspiracy theories that suggested Busch was coerced into leaving the team. He expressed deep disappointment with these baseless claims and did not hold back his frustration.
Had Kyle Busch remained with JGR in 2024, it is highly likely that they would have secured more victories this season. Alongside Denny Hamlin, the No:18 car would have emerged as a formidable favorite for the championship. As the current season progresses, it will be intriguing to observe the unfolding dynamics of both teams.
