In a heartbreaking incident, two U.S. Navy aviators—Lt. Cmdr. Lyndsay “Miley” Evans and Lt. Serena “Dug” Wileman—lost their lives in a tragic plane crash last week near Mount Rainier, Washington. The crash occurred during a training flight, shortly after the pair returned from a grueling nine-month deployment in Yemen as part of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 130, known as the “Zappers.”
Both 31-year-old aviators from California had recently completed missions targeting the Iranian-backed Houthi militia, showcasing their exemplary skill in aerial warfare and electronic attacks. Evans, a decorated aviator, was honored as Growler Tactics Instructor of the Year and had earned several medals for her service. She also participated in the Navy’s all-women Super Bowl flyover last year, marking a historic moment in the 50-year journey of women in the Navy.
Wileman, also highly decorated, was remembered for her warmth and kindness outside the cockpit, lighting up every room she entered.
This devastating loss has sent shockwaves through the Navy community, as these two trailblazing women are mourned for their bravery, skill, and compassion.
