Rivera, a longtime friend of Trump’s, took to X (formerly Twitter) with a scathing critique, sharing his disillusionment with Trump’s refusal to accept the 2020 election results. “If you are a Republican, Donald Trump has made a liar of you,” he wrote, condemning Trump’s “menacing campaign” to deny Biden’s victory and the encouragement that led to the January 6 Capitol attack.
Rivera, who once praised Trump’s presidency as “underrated,” recounted a moment in 2020 when Trump allegedly assured him he’d “do the right thing” and accept the election’s outcome. Rivera’s disappointment grew as Trump continued to promote what Rivera labeled “the big lie” about the election being stolen, urging his supporters to adopt this narrative as their own. Rivera’s declaration that he is “voting for Kamala Harris to be our 47th President” was the climax of his critique.
In recent years, Rivera has increasingly distanced himself from Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric. He was especially outraged by Trump’s recent comments on immigrants “poisoning the blood” of America, a phrase Rivera compared to Nazi-era vitriol. “It is disgusting,” Rivera stated, linking Trump’s words to a long history of fearmongering against immigrant groups.
For Rivera, the final straw has been Trump’s ongoing divisiveness. As he stated on The View in 2023, Rivera intends to dedicate the rest of his career to preventing Trump’s return to the White House, expressing both regret over their friendship and a determination to take a stand against what he views as Trump’s betrayal of democratic principles.
