Hello, how are you today?
I’m doing well, thank you for asking.
Renger van der Zande and Sebastien Bourdais emerged as the winners on the streets of Long Beach in an exciting third round of the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Chip Ganassi Racing made the strategic decision not to change tires during the pit stop, which worked in their favor amid several incidents during the race. The tight street circuit proved to be more challenging than expected, with drivers falling victim to others’ mistakes or making their own errors. Pipo Derani secured his third consecutive pole position, despite driving a damaged Cadillac V-Series.R #31 for the Wehlen Cadillac Racing team, while Vasser Sullivan dominated the GTD field. The race saw intense battles for podium positions, with Bourdais, Yelloly, and Tandy among the contenders. A Safety Car was deployed due to an incident involving two GTD cars, temporarily interrupting Derani’s lead. The race resumed, but another caution period ended Bourdais’s pursuit of Derani. The most recent race winner, Louis Deletraz, hit the wall, causing significant damage to his Acura ARX-06 #40. The caution period allowed the GTPs to have enough fuel to finish the race, and Bourdais’ #01 car did not change tires, giving them an advantage in terms of strategy and track position. The rest of the field opted to only change the left-side tires, which wear out more on the Long Beach circuit. The green flag was waved with van der Zande leading the race, followed by Aitken and Jaminet. The Wayne Taylor Racing team with the Acura GTP #10 from Andretti faced drama when Ricky Taylor collided with Richard Westbrook’s Porsche 963 #85 from JDC Miller MotorSports, resulting in a drive-through penalty for Taylor. Tension rose when Connor De Phillippi from the BMW RLL #25 car tried to overtake Felipe Nasr’s Porsche #7, resulting in contact. Van der Zande was unable to extend the lead at the front, with Aitken, Jaminet, Nasr, and De Phillippi following closely. Nasr’s attempt to overtake Loris Spinelli’s Forte Racing Lamborghini #78 resulted in contact with Jaminet’s car, causing a brief congestion. De Phillippi hit the tire barrier at turn 6 after losing parts of the car, leaving him at the back of the pack. The final part of the race saw Aitken challenging van der Zande for the lead, with Nasr close behind in third. Van der Zande eventually took the victory for the Cadillac V-Series.R #01, followed by Aitken and Derani in the Wehlen Cadillac Racing #31. Nasr and Cameron secured third place in the Porsche Penske 963 #7, while Jaminet and Tandy finished fourth in the Porsche Penske #6. Gianmaria Bruni completed the top five in the Proton Competition Porsche 963 #5, alongside teammate Mike Rockenfeller. In the GTD race, Frankie Montecalvo from the Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3 #12 received a drive-through penalty for changing lanes before crossing the finish line. Albert Costa Balboa showed a strong performance in the Conquest Racing Ferrari 296 #34, moving from third to second place. The Vasser Sullivan Lexus #89, driven by Parker Thompson, maintained the lead and focused on increasing the gap to their rivals. Brendan Iribe from Inception Racing lost control of his McLaren 720S GT3 EVO #70, resulting in a collision with Adam Adelson’s Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3.R #120. The #120 car suffered damage that ended its race. The Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG #57 team with Philip Ellis received a drive-through penalty for having too many team members working on the car during a pit stop. The Vasser Sullivan Lexus #12 suffered suspension damage and a flat tire after hitting the wall, leading to its retirement. In the final sprint to the finish, Gradient Racing’s Stevan McAleer fought for a podium spot against Mike Skeen in car #32 and Corey Lewis in the Ford Mustang Proton #55. The Barnicoat and Thompson Lexus #89 claimed victory, followed by the Turner Motorsport BMW M4 #96 and the McAleer and Monk duo in car #66. The Levorato and Lewis Proton #55 team secured fifth place.
