Max Verstappen and Lando Norris wasted their chances of victory in Austria after colliding in the final laps of the race. The Austrian Grand Prix has been one of the most thrilling races of the 2024 Formula 1 season. It seemed that Verstappen was on his way to a comfortable win at the Red Bull home circuit. However, the situation took a dramatic turn when Verstappen and Norris battled for the lead in the final moments of the race.
Verstappen had a problematic pitstop in the latter part of the race, allowing Norris to get within just two seconds behind him. The reigning world champion fiercely defended against the British driver, resulting in both drivers going off track on multiple occasions. However, when Norris made one final attempt to overtake Verstappen, the two cars collided at turn 3. This collision caused significant damage and punctures to both vehicles, effectively ending their chances of securing a possible victory in the race.
Norris had already received a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits during the race. Consequently, the McLaren driver needed to establish a significant advantage over Verstappen. However, after the incident, Norris had no choice but to retire from the race.
On the other hand, Verstappen managed to make a pitstop and return to the race. Subsequently, he received a ten-second penalty for the serious incident. However, this penalty did not hinder Verstappen’s prospects as he crossed the finish line with a solid lead of over 20 seconds ahead of sixth-placed Nico Hulkenberg.
Undoubtedly, the fans were shocked to witness the race leaders squander their chances of victory in Austria. George Russell emerged as the lucky winner of the battle, securing his first Formula 1 victory since 2022. Max Verstappen and Lando Norris are likely not satisfied with the outcome and may express their dissatisfaction in post-race comments.
