James Vowles, the Team Principal of Williams, issued a warning about the potential impact of the proposed Formula 1 regulations for 2026. According to Vowles, these regulations could result in reducing the time difference between Formula 1 and Formula 2 cars to just a few seconds. The FIA recently released initial guidelines for the upcoming technical rules, which focus on creating lighter and more aerodynamic cars, with a significant reduction in aerodynamic pressure. However, the prospect of the next generation cars having 30% less aerodynamic pressure and 55% less drag than current models has raised concerns among team bosses. Vowles conducted tests on a simulator with a 2025 model, and the results indicate that the new cars could dangerously compete with modern F2 cars. To maintain Formula 1’s status as the premier motorsport series, Vowles argues that adjustments need to be made to prevent F1 from being overshadowed by rival series like Super Formula and IndyCar.
“It is absolutely crucial that we remain the premier series in motorsport,” Vowles emphasized. “In my opinion, Formula 1 should be considered the pinnacle of this sport. Therefore, it is essential that we preserve the performance and speed we currently possess. However, as Andrea Stella, the McLaren team principal, astutely pointed out, there is a discrepancy in this regard. The performance difference between an F1 car and an F2 car can be as small as a few seconds. This is becoming increasingly concerning, especially when we consider other series around the world that have been designated as our competitors.”
However, Vowles acknowledged that the document published by the FIA does not represent the final guidelines and may be modified before the rules are ratified.
“But also, these are preliminary regulations,” he stated. “And this week, there were two modifications that significantly reduced aerodynamic pressure.
“I am confident that we will find a better solution in this regard. We are not far off. It just requires a little more work.”
To deal with the increased dependence on electrical power in the engine, the aerodynamic aims to increase aerodynamic pressure in the corners and increase top speed on the straights.
However, Stella argues that this approach would create an unbalanced formula and suggests that adjustments should also be made to reduce chassis dependence.
“The cars have little speed in the corners and are very fast on the straights,” he clarified. “So, these two aspects need to be rebalanced.”
He further added: “I believe the use of power units should be adjusted.
We can still achieve a 50-50 concept, which is appealing, but it can be done without imposing excessive demands on the chassis, which then becomes challenging to meet.
Therefore, I think it’s time for all parties to understand that they must contribute to the success of the sport, both in terms of power units and chassis.”
The current team managers have a meeting scheduled to express their concerns during a gathering organized by F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, which will take place this morning in Montreal.
