The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League will mark the end point for all current Formula 1 driver contracts. The duration of each contract varies, and this information is crucial during the F1 negotiation season. Below, we provide the expiration dates of all F1 drivers’ contracts for 2024. It is worth noting that some contracts may include options for additional years beyond the specified dates.
In May 2022, Max Verstappen signed a lucrative new deal with Red Bull, securing his presence on the team until 2028. Despite his remarkable achievements and numerous records in F1, Verstappen hinted at the possibility of not extending his stay beyond the current contract expiration.
Red Bull also secured the services of Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, extending his contract for another two years in early June. Although Perez’s form had dipped in previous races, this announcement suggests his position within the team until the 2026 season. However, Red Bull only confirmed their line-up for the 2025 season, leaving some uncertainty regarding Perez’s contract, which may be a one-plus-one deal.
Both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell signed new two-year contracts in 2023, with the intention of staying at Mercedes until at least the end of 2025. Hamilton’s contract had an option for a second year, which he ended up exercising, leading to his remarkable move to Ferrari in the 2025 season.
The Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, initially had contracts expiring at the end of 2024. However, Leclerc’s extension was announced, ensuring his presence for “several more seasons.” Although the exact duration of Leclerc’s contract was not specified in the January announcement, it is believed that he will remain at Ferrari until at least the end of 2029. On the other hand, Sainz acknowledged that the 2024 season will be his last with the team and is considering options with Williams and the Sauber team, which will become Audi’s official entry in 2026.
Lando Norris committed to a long-term contract with McLaren in early 2022, ensuring his presence until at least the end of 2025. Despite discussions with Red Bull, Norris chose to stay with McLaren. In January 2024, he reaffirmed his commitment with another “long-term” contract, extending his stay until the end of 2026 and possibly beyond.
Oscar Piastri, a promising rookie in 2023, had his original contract with McLaren updated to a four-year contract due to his impressive performance. This update means that McLaren will retain their Norris-Piastri duo for at least the next three years.
Fernando Alonso shocked the F1 community by switching from Alpine to Aston Martin in 2022. His initial contract with Aston Martin was set to expire at the end of 2024, but he extended it to cover the 2025 and 2026 seasons. As for his teammate, Lance Stroll, the details of his contract are not publicly disclosed, but there are no indications that their partnership is coming to an end in the near future.
In 2021, Esteban Ocon signed a three-year contract with the Renault team, which facilitated his return to F1 after a year away. However, Ocon and Alpine will part ways after the 2024 season, as announced shortly after a collision on the track with his teammate, Pierre Gasly. Ocon has not yet revealed his alternative plans.
Gasly’s contract, like Ocon’s, ends in 2024. However, there is a higher likelihood of Gasly staying at Alpine until 2025.
Alex Albon joined Williams in 2022 after a year as a reserve driver for Red Bull. He initially signed a multi-year contract until the end of 2025, which was later extended to cover the new era of F1 in 2026.
Logan Sargeant secured a second year in F1 after his debut season. Whether he will stay beyond 2024 will depend on his progress and improvement.
Red Bull’s second F1 team will have a new name in 2024, but the driver lineup will remain unchanged. Yuki Tsunoda will continue for a fourth season, while Daniel Ricciardo will embark on his first full-time season with Red Bull’s junior team since 2013.
Valtteri Bottas joined Sauber under the Alfa Romeo brand after losing his spot at Mercedes to George Russell. His multi-year contract will keep him with the team until the end of 2024.
Zhou Guanyu’s original contract expired last year, and he received a one-year extension in 2023. This extension will allow him to continue with the Switzerland-based team, which will be renamed as Stake F1 team from 2024 to 2025. However, it is uncertain whether Guanyu will be renewed for the following year, considering Sauber’s commitment to Nico Hulkenberg from 2025 onwards.
Hulkenberg returned to full-time action in F1 after three years away. He signed a two-year contract that will expire at the end of 2024. After the end of his contract, Hulkenberg will join Sauber as the lead driver for Audi’s next project.
Kevin Magnussen’s current contract will also expire in 2024, marking his seventh year with the team.
