Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti has confirmed that a minor injury to the arm has led to the replacement of Kyle Marcelli with Sandy Mitchell for the upcoming IMSA Sportscar Weekend round at Road America. Mitchell, a 24-year-old from Scotland, will be driving the #45 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO GTD alongside teammate Danny Formal in a 2-hour and 40-minute sprint race on August 4th. Marcelli, who is Formal’s regular co-driver for the season, will be missing the seventh round of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship due to the arm injury. Mitchell, an experienced Lamborghini factory driver, is entering his seventh season in the GT World Challenge Europe, with two class victories at the 24 Hours of Spa. He expressed his excitement to be racing with the WTRAndretti team again and is looking forward to working with everyone in the GTD program.
Mitchell also mentioned his familiarity with the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 after a successful test at Laguna Seca earlier this year. He and Formal will be pushing for a top result at Road America, a track that Mitchell is familiar with from his time in Super Trofeo.
Mitchell, a young talent in GT3 racing, won the 2020 British GT title and has been competing in the series for five seasons. He currently sits in second place in the standings with teammate Alex Martin. In addition to Super Trofeo, Mitchell has also participated in the Daytona 24 Hours in 2022 and 2024, driving Lamborghini GT3 cars in the GTD category.
Marcelli expressed his disappointment at missing the Road America race due to his arm injury but acknowledged that it needs to be addressed for him to perform at his best. He spoke highly of Mitchell, mentioning their previous test together in April and the knowledge and experience he brings to the team. Marcelli wished the program the best and hopes for a fantastic result at Road America.
