Severe weather conditions resulting from the remnants of Hurricane Debby initially compelled organizers of the 2024 Wyndham Championship to prohibit spectators from entering the premises to witness the tournament’s first round on Thursday at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The announcement, made on Wednesday evening, confirmed that the first round would commence as scheduled at 6:50 a.m. ET on Thursday, with officials emphasizing that play would continue until conditions permitted.
However, on Thursday morning, a delay in the start of the first round was declared, with the first tee shot not anticipated until 3 p.m. ET.
Approximately six hours later, the entire first round was canceled, as the PGA Tour issued a brief update stating: “The first round of the Wyndham Championship is postponed to Friday, August 9, due to Tropical Storm Debby. Updated first-round starting times will follow.”
Those individuals possessing tickets for Thursday’s event have the option to attend on any other day during the week and utilize their ticket for entry.
Tournament Director Bobby Powell expressed the difficulty of the decision to exclude spectators, stating on Wednesday: “This decision was a difficult one for us to make with our partners at the PGA Tour, but everyone’s safety is our top priority. The most recent forecast indicates that the storm may clear our area by Friday.”
