Zhou Guanyu, a driver from China, expressed optimism about the Sauber Formula 1 car in 2024, following his performance in the Sprint Qualifying at the Chinese Grand Prix. Zhou had faced difficulties in qualifying before, but managed to advance to the final stage using the Medium compound. Unfortunately, rain hindered his progress, and both Zhou and Valtteri Bottas ended up at the back of the grid in the challenging session. Zhou believes they could have done better if the conditions were dry. Despite the setback, Zhou is satisfied with the day and grateful for the fans’ support.
Sauber has yet to score points in the first four races of the season, but both drivers are starting close to the points positions. However, Zhou is cautious about his chances of breaking into the top eight, as their direct rivals have shown a stronger race pace. Nevertheless, Zhou is determined to give his all in the Sprint race and remains hopeful that anything can happen.
Bottas, who will start in ninth place, also faced challenges due to Sauber’s pit-stop difficulties. However, he remains confident in the team’s competitiveness and is pleased with his performance in mixed conditions. Bottas congratulated Zhou for making it into the top 10 and expressed his happiness for the Chinese fans.
Looking ahead to the Sprint race, Bottas admitted that it is difficult to assess Sauber’s race pace based on just one practice session. However, he is encouraged by their performance in fast laps and their ability to be competitive in different conditions. Bottas is optimistic about the rest of the weekend.
